[00:00:21] Speaker A: Hey, welcome to Tailgate Beers. Ryan and Austin here as usual. Day three, Tailgate and tall boys here in Bloomington, Illinois. And our old friend.
[00:00:31] Speaker B: Is this on?
[00:00:31] Speaker A: Old Joe Stan is joining.
[00:00:33] Speaker B: Talking about my gray hair. Our.
[00:00:34] Speaker A: Our national. National. National. Whatever. National artist.
Last time I called because I just
[00:00:43] Speaker B: got introduced on the side stage as a local artist. No, thanks.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: For our friend, the national artist.
[00:00:49] Speaker B: On our.
[00:00:49] Speaker C: On our other podcast, he said regional, and you. You called me out on that.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: So I'm evidently very sensitive about this.
The guy that introduced us on the. On the stage over there, he made him make sure to make a point that we were a local band.
Yeah. Which we are. We are. It's true. Yeah, it's true. But you're.
[00:01:06] Speaker A: You're all over. I mean, you know what?
[00:01:08] Speaker B: We're local to wherever you're listening.
[00:01:10] Speaker A: That's right. But I mean, you look at your. Your routing. I mean, you're Minnesota. You're all the way over to what, Oklahoma. And all the way around from there.
[00:01:18] Speaker B: We have been to Oklahoma one. Yeah. Several times.
Several times.
[00:01:23] Speaker A: So certainly not just no regional.
[00:01:25] Speaker B: No.
[00:01:26] Speaker C: That's why he's a national treasure. Yep.
That's why we're gonna get into the real.
[00:01:31] Speaker B: Talking about Nicholas Cage.
[00:01:32] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Great movie, both of them.
[00:01:35] Speaker C: Could be. You know. Have you ever gotten what you'll discover. Have you ever gotten compared to looks to. Who do you. Who do people say who.
[00:01:41] Speaker B: You look like Aaron Rodgers.
[00:01:44] Speaker C: I can see that.
Especially, I mean, not the are you big ayahuasca guy.
[00:01:49] Speaker B: I used to get big Billy Currington when I was younger.
One time we were. I was in a mall in Chicago before a show because I was just killing time and evidently Billy Currington was in town and somebody came up to me and thought I was Billy Currington.
[00:02:03] Speaker C: But you don't have a.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: No, I'm not. They wouldn't believe me.
They wouldn't believe me.
[00:02:09] Speaker C: But you don't have a curly. You don't have a golden doodle haircut.
[00:02:11] Speaker B: This was back in the day, I had more of a. This was probably 10 years ago.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: Oh, the shaggy days.
[00:02:15] Speaker B: Now, the couple years ago, we were at We Fest and Riley Green was on the main stage and we played a stage that was like three miles away, but we still had all access passes. Kind of like today here at Tailgates and Tall Boys, I'm not three miles away. I'm about, what, mile and a half? Mile and a half and. But I can still get back on backstage to the main stage. You know, it was the same Thing we fest and Riley Green was playing that night, and so we went up there and hung out and he had gotten off stage, and then Luke Bryan was playing, and these people started wanting pictures with me. And I'm like, oh, this is cool, people.
It quickly became apparent that people thought I was Riley Greene.
And so I started trying to tell these people, like, no, I'm not.
I'm not. Not them. And then. Then they didn't believe me. They thought I was doing the. No, it's not me. So that. So that I wouldn't.
Didn't have to take pictures with them.
[00:03:08] Speaker C: Do you have a mustache then?
[00:03:11] Speaker B: No, I think I just had the beard. I was also still considerably less ripped than he evidently is.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: I hear a lot about Rather Green these days.
[00:03:20] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:03:21] Speaker C: Yeah, he's played ours, what, three years in a row?
[00:03:24] Speaker B: Yeah, him and Austin are like great friends.
[00:03:26] Speaker C: Not. Never met the guy.
Never met the guy, but his love
[00:03:30] Speaker A: life, what you hear about quite a bit.
[00:03:32] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:03:32] Speaker B: Do you really? Yeah, really.
[00:03:35] Speaker C: Well, not Joe. Joe's off the grid. He doesn't.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: He doesn't hear normal. Normal news, anything like that. Yeah, I don't keep up on celebrity gossip like that.
[00:03:44] Speaker C: Really? You don't read People magazine when you
[00:03:46] Speaker B: go into the store? No.
[00:03:47] Speaker C: Really?
[00:03:47] Speaker B: No.
[00:03:48] Speaker A: So it's been probably, what, three months, four months since we sat down in your. Your garage cold.
[00:03:54] Speaker B: You guys didn't have mic stands back then?
[00:03:56] Speaker A: We didn't have mic stands. We've upgraded since.
[00:03:58] Speaker C: I still have.
[00:03:59] Speaker A: We figured it out.
[00:03:59] Speaker C: Holding up mic. Yeah.
[00:04:02] Speaker A: Sat on the. The Steelers couch. I remember those.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: Steelers pillar. Yeah. A lot of Steeler. Steelers blankets. Steelers pillows. Yeah, whatever.
[00:04:08] Speaker A: And then here we are, tailgating tall boys. Bloomington.
[00:04:10] Speaker B: Look how far we've come.
[00:04:12] Speaker C: So what?
[00:04:13] Speaker B: When we started this podcast, there was a whole panel of people and they all just left.
[00:04:18] Speaker C: Yeah, they were not into it.
[00:04:19] Speaker A: I'm not sure we know everybody. That's.
[00:04:21] Speaker C: I don't know everybody.
[00:04:22] Speaker B: Good riddance, then.
[00:04:24] Speaker C: What's. All right, so you've played.
[00:04:26] Speaker B: You've got.
[00:04:26] Speaker C: You've played Bloomington. You played. Did you play. You played Peoria, too, when it was on the riverfront.
[00:04:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:32] Speaker C: So how many tailgates and tails?
[00:04:34] Speaker B: I don't know how many owners of this festival I've played for.
[00:04:39] Speaker C: Probably several.
At least three.
[00:04:43] Speaker B: Yeah. No.
[00:04:43] Speaker C: How many tailgates have you played?
[00:04:44] Speaker B: I think I played the first one, which was at summer. It was at the Enchilada Park.
[00:04:48] Speaker C: Three Sisters Park.
[00:04:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
I believe Summer camp.
[00:04:51] Speaker A: Is that what you're gonna say?
[00:04:52] Speaker B: Was Willie Nelson there or like Kris Kristofferson was there.
[00:04:55] Speaker C: There's the lake Ravina or Ravina at the Lake.
[00:05:00] Speaker B: And then I did. And then I did.
Well, that was a whole different festival.
[00:05:03] Speaker C: Yeah, that was. I didn't know if you played that.
[00:05:05] Speaker B: That guy's in jail or something. But then. And then we did the one at the Riverfront, and then I've done two here.
Although you've done three here last. Yeah, but last year we got rained out, so I didn't. I didn't.
[00:05:17] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: I hung out in the green room a lot last year.
[00:05:21] Speaker C: How was Iowa for you?
[00:05:23] Speaker B: It was. I mean, I don't know. You were there. How was it?
[00:05:25] Speaker C: I'm asking you. I didn't know how you thought your performance.
[00:05:28] Speaker B: How did you think my performance?
[00:05:29] Speaker C: I did not see your performance.
I didn't make this one.
[00:05:32] Speaker B: You didn't even watch.
[00:05:33] Speaker C: I was busy.
[00:05:34] Speaker B: I thought today's performance was better.
[00:05:36] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:05:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Y.
[00:05:37] Speaker C: Did you play all the entire set?
So we got our money. No wonder. The check.
[00:05:43] Speaker B: I.
[00:05:44] Speaker C: That's probably the reason.
[00:05:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. So. So I'm really good about timing sets. I take pride in it.
[00:05:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:52] Speaker B: Professional. This is what I do for a living.
[00:05:53] Speaker C: He played a set in Clinton on 1.2.
[00:05:56] Speaker B: Essentially, I. I was 10 minutes short, and that never happens to me. It never.
[00:06:00] Speaker A: I saw that in the. In the paper. I was wondering.
[00:06:03] Speaker B: You saw that?
[00:06:03] Speaker A: Yeah, it was
[00:06:06] Speaker C: actually front page.
[00:06:08] Speaker B: Joe Stanman goes short.
Joe Stammen shorts Clinton.
[00:06:14] Speaker C: Jose Strombian Shortage Clinton. Yeah.
[00:06:17] Speaker B: I think 10 minutes. It was not intentional. It was. It was just a mistake. I screw up every once in a while at work, I screw up. Do you ever screw up at work?
[00:06:24] Speaker A: Oh, absolutely.
[00:06:25] Speaker B: Every day. Yeah, every day. I screwed up. I felt like I did really well for the first 50 minutes, and then I just left. Left early on a Friday.
Not on purpose, though. Like, the clock was wrong.
[00:06:37] Speaker C: So do you just know that you have X number of songs and it's going to take you this much?
[00:06:40] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:06:41] Speaker C: How close can you get to exact time? Have you ever tried?
[00:06:44] Speaker B: No, I'm really good at it normally. And then. Yes. I pretty much know how to build it on a spreadsheet. And then I print that spreadsheet and then I play the set list for the most part, every once in a while. You audible. I made a couple audibles today, and we still landed, like, right where we needed to be, which is normal. Last week in Clinton, I landed 10 minutes early, and I.
[00:07:04] Speaker C: Did we get 10 extra minutes today to make up for.
[00:07:07] Speaker B: I Would have, but no, that's not. You can't do that when you're first on the side stitch age.
They don't, they don't take kindly.
You can be forgiven for going under. You cannot be forgiven for going over.
[00:07:19] Speaker C: Speaking of audibles, how bad are the Steelers going to be this year? Are they still just going to rely? Don't they have like Russell West Berman?
I think Aaron Rodgers is now.
[00:07:28] Speaker B: I think it'll be very average step brother. I think it'll be right down the middle as usual. Really. And, and it, and it remains to be seen whether that ball that they're going to pitch right down the middle will be crushed 450ft into the river.
[00:07:42] Speaker C: Talking about baseball or football or whether
[00:07:44] Speaker B: they'll, you know, just lose in the first round of the playoffs again and everybody goes home.
[00:07:49] Speaker C: What do you think the problem is for the Steelers just after they lost Big Ben?
[00:07:52] Speaker B: Just. You know what? I'm not, I'm not a football professional. I don't know.
[00:07:56] Speaker C: I was just curious. You said audible. It's all made me think about.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: Yeah, Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. Did I ever tell you my quarterback coach at Northern Illinois University was the offensive coordinator for the Steelers for a few years and then he was laughed out of town a couple years ago, unfortunately.
[00:08:13] Speaker C: From Pittsburgh?
[00:08:14] Speaker B: Yes. Why? It was like my.
He just wasn't doing a good job, I guess. I don't know. He's a great guy. When he played, when I played.
[00:08:22] Speaker C: If the Steelers called you up right now and said that you could be a third string, would you do it?
[00:08:27] Speaker B: No.
[00:08:27] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:08:28] Speaker B: No.
[00:08:29] Speaker C: Not at all.
No. Do you think you could at least like, get a couple downs?
[00:08:33] Speaker B: No.
[00:08:33] Speaker C: Could you get a first down in the NFL?
[00:08:37] Speaker B: I don't think their offensive line is quite good enough that I could, you know, I don't have to run for it.
[00:08:42] Speaker C: So you're going to blame it on the offensive line?
[00:08:44] Speaker B: Well, I still, I can't throw a football.
And I'm glad you're bringing up this like this, this really sensitive subject where my whole career ended, because I can't. I still throw a ball to my dog's underhand because my shoulder's so screwed up.
[00:08:57] Speaker C: But that was because of your offensive line.
[00:08:59] Speaker B: No, that wasn't. But if I were to get a first down in the NFL, I would have to run for it because I can't throw a football anymore.
[00:09:06] Speaker C: Well, you do that.
[00:09:06] Speaker B: You do the Brett Harder first down in the NFL. The, the, the hole would have to be so wide would have to be incredibly impressive.
[00:09:16] Speaker A: Wasn't it Achilles that you had?
[00:09:17] Speaker B: Yeah, I tore my Achilles last year.
[00:09:19] Speaker C: Yeah. So you can do the Brett Favre
[00:09:21] Speaker B: underhand, like piling on the injuries. We're piling on the injuries, yeah.
Yeah.
[00:09:26] Speaker C: I was just curious.
[00:09:27] Speaker B: You're curious about how far my star has fallen?
[00:09:30] Speaker C: No, I was just curious to know if you think. Because I think a lot of people think they're good at something and then you say, do you think you could just get a first down?
[00:09:37] Speaker B: No, I think it could. I don't think I could. How many?
[00:09:41] Speaker C: I'd myself, I would piss my.
[00:09:42] Speaker B: How many three pointers do you think you could drain in the NBA?
[00:09:45] Speaker C: Zero. I don't. I wouldn't get the ball past, like, their free throw line.
[00:09:48] Speaker B: Yeah. Okay. So it's similar. Yeah, Similar. Yeah. Now, do I think there was a time in my life where I could have had the circumstances lined up, gotten a first down in the NFL? Maybe, but still, it would have required a very good offensive line.
Yeah.
[00:10:06] Speaker C: Wasn't. Isn't it. Who's the Seahawks quarterback? Russ.
[00:10:09] Speaker B: Russell Wilson.
[00:10:10] Speaker C: Russell Wilson wasn't Rick Meyer. No, no. Russell Scott Hassell.
[00:10:14] Speaker B: No, no.
[00:10:15] Speaker C: Well, didn't he go to the Steelers?
Yeah, he did last year, but last year. Do you think you're better? Do you think you're better than him?
[00:10:21] Speaker B: No. What? What are you talking about?
How would I be even remotely in the same asking hemisphere as Russ? No. What?
What?
[00:10:32] Speaker A: Why?
[00:10:32] Speaker B: Why would I be?
[00:10:33] Speaker A: They had the Bears.
[00:10:34] Speaker B: I'm a musician. I'm not a football player. I'm not an athlete anymore.
[00:10:38] Speaker A: But Aaron Rodgers is taking him home this year, though.
[00:10:40] Speaker B: If I have a tough workout, like I got to do yoga the next day to feel normal three days later. No.
[00:10:45] Speaker C: Even yoga makes me hurt. I think I pulled someone doing yoga.
[00:10:47] Speaker A: I got a yoga ball over there that I sit on and pull something
[00:10:50] Speaker B: every day in the bathroom. But that has nothing to do with this interview.
[00:10:53] Speaker C: All right, Back to the actual music career.
[00:10:56] Speaker B: So is that what we're talking about today?
[00:10:58] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, we actually are talking about that. No, we love having you.
[00:11:01] Speaker B: It's a lot of that's even going to be used.
[00:11:03] Speaker C: Oh, absolutely. This is the only good content we can get is when we're people like you.
[00:11:07] Speaker B: Right, right, right.
[00:11:08] Speaker C: Let your hair down a little bit.
[00:11:09] Speaker B: Tens of people that listen to this,
[00:11:11] Speaker C: all 14 of them, most of them might be sitting here.
[00:11:14] Speaker A: Two of them are standing upside that camper all the way down there.
[00:11:19] Speaker B: Well, based on, like, how everybody in this whole party Cleared out as soon as we, quote, unquote, turn on the microphones.
[00:11:25] Speaker C: Right. They weren't having it.
[00:11:27] Speaker B: How long can we go until the rest of these four people leave?
[00:11:30] Speaker C: He's falling asleep.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: Can you give me one of them?
[00:11:37] Speaker C: We're getting heckled.
[00:11:37] Speaker B: Yeah, bring them up.
[00:11:38] Speaker C: We're getting heckled, man. You need a beer.
[00:11:40] Speaker B: Bring them up.
[00:11:42] Speaker A: You're fine.
[00:11:44] Speaker C: Get a cooler. Why'd you put it back there?
[00:11:49] Speaker B: Yeah, Austin, I don't know how much you know about beer, but you typically don't put your cooler in direct sunlight.
[00:11:56] Speaker C: No. Not frowned upon.
[00:11:58] Speaker B: Well, it's not.
[00:11:58] Speaker C: If you have a good cooler, it doesn't matter.
[00:12:02] Speaker B: Well, I mean, it still doesn't help. I mean, why good? You know, why would you. Why would you ever put it in direct sunlight when shade is an option?
[00:12:09] Speaker C: Yeah, that's a good point.
[00:12:12] Speaker B: Oh, can we talk about the time where. Where Austin suggested that for me for Raised Rowdy?
[00:12:18] Speaker A: Oh.
[00:12:20] Speaker B: So I'm like, hey, we got a new record coming out July 11th. I'd love to promote it.
[00:12:23] Speaker A: July 11th, new record.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Yeah. Like, hey, hey, Austin, you guys. You know, the guys from Raised Rowdy. Like, could you, like, you know, put in a word for me? You know, maybe get. Get him to do an interview at these tailgates and tall boys things,
[00:12:39] Speaker C: you
[00:12:39] Speaker B: know, because we got a new record coming out. We'd love to promote it. I'd love to be interviewed about it, whatever. And he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I can do that. So I was like, all right, cool. I'll email you the press release for the record. And so I email Austin the press release. And so Austin forwards me. Forwards them the email that I sent him and says, hey, this guy would like to.
This guy would really like you guys to. To interview him.
Dash, Austin, you couldn't, like, put, like, a word in for me? It couldn't be like, hey, man, I'm really enthusiastic about this.
[00:13:11] Speaker A: I've known this guy since high school.
[00:13:13] Speaker C: Hey, yeah.
[00:13:17] Speaker B: And Austin has had the link to the. Austin has heard this record, like, four months ago. He's one of the first people to listen to it. He might say, like, hey, you know what? I'm really into this record. I think you guys need to tap into this.
But instead, he forwards me. He forwards them my email.
[00:13:35] Speaker C: I said. And actually, until this very moment, I never saw. They never replied, hey, man, there's this
[00:13:40] Speaker B: guy that, you know, he wants to be interviewed.
[00:13:43] Speaker C: I said. I said, nick, Matt, I have Joe Stam copied here on this email.
He would love to get connected with you guys for his upcoming release as well as possibly getting on some rounds.
[00:13:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:13:56] Speaker C: Him and, like, Joe Stam emails me back in May and says, thanks for trying, Austin. They never replied, which is surprising considering the glowing endorsement you elegantly provided.
I never even saw your reply back.
I never saw your reply until right now. I just screenshot it. You good?
I didn't say it like that. I actually thought I made some sort of introduction and that's why. No, that was actually very nice of me.
[00:14:25] Speaker B: It was one of the most mailed in things anybody's ever done for me.
[00:14:30] Speaker C: I literally remember you.
[00:14:31] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:14:31] Speaker C: And first of all, he called me to ask.
[00:14:34] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, hey, man, and if I'd have known that's what you're gonna do, I'd been like, don't bother, please.
Can I. Can you unsend that email?
[00:14:44] Speaker C: No, they're always really great about. That was. That was me being nice. Oh, thanks. Not like, thanks. Hey, this is my. You know, this is my high school mentor that I looked up to. And then he, you know, he found music and alcohol and drugs and all these.
[00:14:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:59] Speaker C: Turn into Merle Haggard things.
[00:15:01] Speaker B: Merle. Yeah, that would have been better, actually.
[00:15:03] Speaker C: It would have been like, Right.
[00:15:04] Speaker B: Personality into it and says like, hey, here's this guy that I know.
[00:15:08] Speaker C: You type it like that. I never said that.
[00:15:10] Speaker B: Did you type it like this?
[00:15:11] Speaker C: Did you get off. So I. This is where you get off on literally just making fun of me like a younger brother for no reason.
There's no justification.
[00:15:20] Speaker B: You reading the email exchange was actually better than my retelling of it, to be honest.
[00:15:24] Speaker C: But what's funny is, until this moment, I never saw that you emailed me saying you never got a reply back. You didn't even text me and tell me, like, what do you want? What are you doing, Dan?
[00:15:35] Speaker B: It's great.
[00:15:36] Speaker C: It's good stuff.
[00:15:38] Speaker B: I'm glad we worked that into the program because I haven't talked to him about it yet. So I'm glad we did it on record.
[00:15:45] Speaker A: That's gonna be a good real.
[00:15:46] Speaker B: So I'm not gonna be. So we were gonna talk about hiring Austin's my publicist, and then.
Yeah, those. Those. Those plans got shit canned. Right? With our plans of ever being interviewed by a raised rowdy.
[00:16:00] Speaker C: I tried.
[00:16:01] Speaker B: I wouldn't have brought it up, but you're wearing their hat right now.
[00:16:03] Speaker C: I tried.
[00:16:03] Speaker B: For you listening.
[00:16:04] Speaker C: Well, let's. I'm. We're going to call this out and get it.
[00:16:06] Speaker A: Matt Burrell just called me.
[00:16:07] Speaker C: I Don't know. Well, I know because they want us to go pick up Logan for an interview, too. So I'm gonna send. I'm gonna send Ramos.
Ramos, I'm going to send you on an excursion.
[00:16:22] Speaker B: Well, my guitar player is calling me right now. He probably wants to go home.
[00:16:26] Speaker C: Why?
[00:16:27] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:16:27] Speaker C: Not time to go home yet.
[00:16:29] Speaker B: It's early, so. But it's been a hell of a.
