[00:00:00] Speaker A: This was for the home team. This was for the home team. [00:00:14] Speaker B: Hey, welcome to Tailgate Beers. Hey, we got Austin and Ryan here as usual. We're back here on the Cruis'n's Farmington Road set. Hey, tonight, Friday night. We've got Matt Schuster here with us tonight. So let everybody welcome Mat. [00:00:31] Speaker A: Them days on Percy Breeze in the midtown night 20 things. [00:00:39] Speaker C: Yeah. Cheers first. [00:00:41] Speaker A: Cheers. Cheers. [00:00:42] Speaker C: Boy at Cruise. [00:00:42] Speaker B: Cheers Air. [00:00:43] Speaker C: Cheers. [00:00:45] Speaker A: I still haven't learned how to use this damn thing, so I was trying to go around it. [00:00:48] Speaker B: So. Yeah, you're playing Peoria, Illinois. West Peoria. Cruising Farmington Road tonight. First time here in Peoria, Illinois. Central Illinois. [00:00:57] Speaker A: No, it's actually not my first time, but it's my first time playing here, so. Like, first time coming back for work for, you know, songs. But I've been through here many times. [00:01:05] Speaker B: But you're. Yeah. Because you're kind of a local guy. Charleston area. [00:01:09] Speaker A: Right. I mean, it's like two hours away. I would say local. I mean, it's Illinois. It's like if you're not in Chicago. Right. You're your neighbors. [00:01:17] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:01:17] Speaker A: So it's kind of a different. It's a different world from Chicago. So I feel like we're all the same. [00:01:22] Speaker B: Born and raised in, like in Charleston or Charleston, Illinois. [00:01:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:01:26] Speaker B: So eastern Illinois is there. To College town. [00:01:29] Speaker A: Went there twice. Make it through. But yeah, it's like a college town. Yeah, it is. It's cool. There's a lot of excitement. [00:01:36] Speaker B: That's awesome. So you're a tailgate and Tall boys alum, too. [00:01:39] Speaker A: I know I am tailgate tall. [00:01:41] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:41] Speaker A: When did I play that? Do you remember? [00:01:42] Speaker C: It was like, not the stupid last shoot. 2023. [00:01:44] Speaker A: Yes. And that was. That was. That was like one of my first festival opportunities. But, yeah, we played there and it was awesome. [00:01:50] Speaker B: Tell us. [00:01:51] Speaker A: Like, my first festival, I think, actually was it. Yeah. Like, I literally wore cowboy boots and I don't do that. [00:01:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:59] Speaker A: And I respect them and I think they're sick. I get scoliosis and I'm slipping and sliding. But that was like the one time I did it. And that's why how I remember, I'm like, that. I learned one time I was like, I can't do that anymore. [00:02:09] Speaker C: Not for me. [00:02:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:10] Speaker C: But wait, that really is your first festival. So then on top of that, tonight. [00:02:14] Speaker A: There was one more. There was. There was one more. I can't remember. [00:02:16] Speaker C: But you also played Taylorville. You played two tailgate and tall boys back. You bit Bloomington and Taylorville, the mud one. Was the mud part. [00:02:25] Speaker A: Dude, our security was a biker gang. [00:02:27] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:02:27] Speaker A: It was like the craziest thing ever. So sick. [00:02:29] Speaker C: So. And then tonight is your first headline. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Yes, I know. [00:02:34] Speaker C: So tonight at Cruise and Austin Williams was the first here. [00:02:37] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [00:02:38] Speaker C: Now we got Matt, Dave. [00:02:40] Speaker A: We're pumped. We're really pumped to be here. It's like, it's a great first. I can't think of a better first, so. [00:02:45] Speaker C: No. And. And to have you on the festival, you know, that was one where I really didn't know much about you other than I had a buddy that was like, I think a super fan of Matt Schuster. Wade. Oh, yeah, Wade's. Wade's a super fan. Shout out Wade. But that's one where I was like, yeah, I mean, I think he's great. All stuff that you came and played. And then I think we talked briefly there, but not getting to see a ton of it. I think you were side stage just as well. [00:03:11] Speaker A: Man, that was a. I was. I was not polished, I'll tell you that. [00:03:16] Speaker C: No, but that's a perfect way to break in, get fans, you know, sharpen your. Sharpen your pencil. And it's. It's cool that you got to play it. [00:03:24] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:24] Speaker C: So that show being, you know, again, a couple hours away, do you. Do you see a lot of family come to these things? I mean, I know there's some family here tonight and. [00:03:32] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, that's gotta be all the family. We got family in the room. [00:03:36] Speaker A: I think they left. [00:03:37] Speaker C: I think they all left. We're not listening. We're not listening. [00:03:40] Speaker A: People are watching me like, oh, God. [00:03:41] Speaker C: Yeah, we're not listening to this interview. [00:03:43] Speaker A: Right? That's funny. [00:03:45] Speaker C: No. That's gotta be fun, though, to be able to start it off with a bunch of family here. Not like you're clear off in east coast or west coast. [00:03:50] Speaker A: Yeah, it is. It's like both, to be honest. It's like these people know me, so, like, if I, you know, go crazy on stage or whatever, they're just like, who. Who is this guy? And I know, like, I'm just always overthinking and overanalyzing which is a huge issue. I acknowledge it. But. But that's like, that's like always the thing. But like they're supporting me and I like, it's just so nice. It just feels like home everywhere. And there it is. Like one of those things, like if it's two hours, three hours, waits. They're always there. Like, they're always coming. Especially my parents, but like sister, sisters, Brother, brother in law, all them friends. Got a lot of friends. Very fortunate to have, like, a lot of, like, lifelong, like, close friends back home. And they always come and support. So that's really fun. [00:04:33] Speaker C: So you say you're an overthinker. We're two very big overthinkers. Has there ever been an overthink of mullet or no mullet or. Where did that. Yeah, where did that come about? [00:04:43] Speaker A: What do I do? Yeah, there's always that. I mean, every time I go to get a cut, I'm like, all right, is today the day we cut it off? You know? Or do we make. Or do we make it crazier, you know? Yes, absolutely. I've had. I've had. I've had that moment just about every time I get. [00:04:58] Speaker C: I mean, I see it. I'm like, man, I. I've envy you. I mean, I think it's awesome. I'm like, at what point was there, like, a mid phase of, like, the mo where you're like, man, I'm like, I don't have one, but I'm kind of getting there because I just. I could never let my hair grow out that far. [00:05:12] Speaker A: That was, like, right before I came to Nashville. I started Shout Out Hector. Hector is the guy that used to cut me. He was like. The first time I really started doing the mullets, he was cutting University of Illinois, so he's cutting. He was. I think he was cutting a lot of the ballplayers there. And my buddy Basho, who's also here, but I think he's outside, would also get cut by him. And I was like, shit, I'll go. And it's like. It's a whole. It was like. It was just like a whole different. It was a whole different vibe. Like, it was like. It was like the mullet thing, like, with my hair was, like, weird, but he made it so tight. It was so sick. It was. It was awesome. And so now Shout out Molly, who's doing it in Nashville. I have her kind of go bald here. And it. It stays, right? It's. [00:06:01] Speaker C: It's. [00:06:01] Speaker A: I like it. I look at it when it's fresh, and I'm like, that's pretty cool. But I can also see why people are like, dude, this guy's a douchebag. I'm like, shit, why not? [00:06:11] Speaker C: My boy went through the baseball phase where he's like, dad, I got to get. [00:06:15] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:06:15] Speaker A: There's something about that flow, man. You can throw the hat on, you still have the flow. Take it off. It's kind of an attraction. It's a thing, you know, I have. [00:06:23] Speaker B: No flow, no nothing as far as that's concerned. Yeah, yeah. Nothing I can do about that. I mean, it's hereditary. [00:06:31] Speaker C: Yeah, I couldn't do it, but no. So you're in Nashville now. You have been there for how long? [00:06:40] Speaker A: Oh, shit, man. Two and a half years. Let's see. Okay. I moved, like, June ish. Not last year, but the year before. So, yeah, like two and a half years. [00:06:52] Speaker C: And what. What sent that into effect? What was like the deciding factor? [00:06:56] Speaker A: If I'm gonna make that, I'll tell you what it was for me, it was different. So it was like I met my manager, Eric. Shout Out Eric. Hey, there he is. Eric is Jewish, actually, by the way. [00:07:10] Speaker C: In case anybody was wondering. Shout out. Juice Eric. [00:07:13] Speaker A: Eric met Eric Met. [00:07:16] Speaker C: That coat looks Jewish, I can tell you that. I very. I'm jealous. The moment you walked up, I was like, I'm jealous of that coat. I love that coat. [00:07:25] Speaker A: Eric met Lewis Capaldi and said, and I'll never forget it. And I was never even there. But he's like, hey, I'm Jewish Cabaldi. Which is so hilarious. I'm just like, did he laugh? If he didn't laugh, it'd be even better. Better. [00:07:36] Speaker C: Did he laugh? [00:07:39] Speaker A: Anyways, that's funny. Met Eric, and that was probably like half a year prior to that, maybe a little bit more. And he reached out to me. I'd been posted on Tick Tock and met him and a lot of other people, and Eric was a man. So we, you know, long story short, we started working together. And then the whole plan was, you know, let's. Let's keep doing what we're doing. Like, don't change too much. Just keep doing stuff online, keep putting out music. And eventually, you know, we think we can. We can reel in some sort of a advancement situation with distributor or just, you know, whatever is coming in monthly from these streams and be able to actually go to Nashville, not have to do what I've been doing, which was, you know, wrapping sandwiches at Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's, cleaning cars, doing all that shit. Like, just go there for music. And because that was such a reality at first, you know, I was like, well, let's just. Yeah, let's freaking do that. I was in school at the time, so, like, we'll finish out. Which finish out just meant get by. Just basically exist until the semester's over, you know. But I didn't do. We did that. And then finally it became Somewhat sustainable. And I was able to move there and just do music and was fortunate enough to have connections already with some publishers and a label and, you know, got the publishing deal and the record deal pretty dang soon after. And very fortunate. Significantly fortunate. But, you know, it was. I think we dealt with the hand that we were given, as good as we could have, I think. So we moved, you know, roughly two and a half years ago. I moved in with him, and that was great. We did that for a year and we just grinded. And. Yeah, there was no. Really, like, come here and, you know, serve or do, like, which is what a lot of people do, which I respect. I think it's so awesome. Sometimes I have, like, this imposter syndrome of, like. I didn't. I didn't do that. But everybody has their own route, their own way, and I'm really appreciative of mine. And. Yeah. So about two and a half years ago, we made the move and just went after it. [00:09:36] Speaker C: You guys still roommates now? [00:09:37] Speaker A: No, we are not. He. He turned out to be. I found out he was Jewish and then we had to move out. [00:09:43] Speaker C: Who is. [00:09:44] Speaker A: Who is the obviously kid. [00:09:45] Speaker C: Who is the messier one? [00:09:47] Speaker A: Who was the messier one? Eric, obviously. Eric, Come on. No, Eric. Yeah, we had some issues. Yeah. That was one of the things where Eric's like, hey, dude. Like, I like, but can you clean your fucking dishes? [00:10:03] Speaker C: Was that. What was that? What? Separate? Was it finally like, hey, yeah. [00:10:07] Speaker A: No. Why did we end up. I wanted to get a house. Yeah. That's what it was. I was like, dude, I can't. I'm in a bird cage. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:15] Speaker A: And so I just was dying to get into a home, so I moved to a home. Eric is like, never in Nashville. Like, he's all. It's. It's. It's always travel right now. So it's like he. There's not really. I don't feel like a need for you to. To move. Really. [00:10:29] Speaker C: He needs a bed. [00:10:30] Speaker A: Yeah. He needs a bed and a bathroom, right? [00:10:33] Speaker C: Yeah. Place, a shower and. [00:10:35] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. [00:10:36] Speaker C: I can't wait to ask him this question later. [00:10:38] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I was. [00:10:39] Speaker C: I got a burning significantly. [00:10:40] Speaker A: Like, I was the messy one all the time. I remember one time I was late, of course, to something. I think it was vocal lessons or something. And I had literally shattered glass before that. And that's like a classic thing for me to do. Like, right before I gotta go somewhere. Of course, chaos. And I just left it. He was just like. When he got me, like, that's like, you gotta sweep that up. [00:11:00] Speaker B: He just opened his eyes. [00:11:01] Speaker A: He just leave glass. I'm like, walking out here on a phone call. [00:11:04] Speaker C: He shows up here in the apartment with just a text, hey, don't take your shoes off at the door. That's it. [00:11:10] Speaker A: He didn't even get that. Yeah, it's pretty crazy. [00:11:17] Speaker C: Don't mind the crunch. [00:11:18] Speaker A: Yep. [00:11:18] Speaker B: So I want to talk a little bit about and something we have not talked about at all on Tailgate Beers is debuts at the Grand Ole Opry. And I know you had yours earlier this year. What was your experience with that? I've seen some of the behind the scenes. I just love to learn. [00:11:33] Speaker A: It's wild, dude. It was so wild. It's like so the first. I'll say this. So we've done it twice now, and the first time was. This is gonna sound crazy. It was obviously like a dream come true. Crazy. Like, also just, like, a lot of anxiety. Just, like, this is like, a big deal. This is a huge deal. It's a grand old freaking Opry. They were the most. They were just the most, like, welcoming. Just like homey group of people. It was just awesome. It just felt like home. It's just great. But they did this kind of like, this documentary thing for it. And so, you know, that that whole time leading up to the show was like, you know, like, talking with people, doing certain, you know, interviews and photos. And I just. Watching you watch that, I mean, this. [00:12:17] Speaker C: NASA drive me fucking crazy. It's, like, right here. [00:12:20] Speaker A: That's hilarious. [00:12:22] Speaker C: Sorry. The adhd, man, it was like, right here between my eyes. [00:12:26] Speaker A: Same. No, I saw it too. He was very, like. It was very, like, just a lot of, like, pr, like, press and just, like, all that. So, like, to really, like, soak it in is a really challenging thing. I definitely felt it when I stepped out there. My voice, I think, because of the stress was just, like, awful that day. But we got through, and it was the best tequila after that I've ever had, you know, and so that was. But it was like an unforgettable experience. But I will say I have to say this to be a hundred percent honest. The second time around was my favorite. It was the one where I could like, really just absorb it all. [00:13:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:07] Speaker A: Be there, enjoy it. Know how it's gonna go, not have that anxiety. Just go out there and just play music with. Also, like, my two guitar players that I had, like, really started to, you know, kindle a relationship with. So that was. It was just enjoyable. Like, we just had all the friends and family there. And it was just like, the same thing, but just, like, this time is, like, a little bit more chill. But both times, unbelievable. There's stuff you only dream of, you know, and so that's something that I'll, you know, always be around. I think, like, I'll go to my grave with that. [00:13:35] Speaker C: And for people that don't know. Sorry. Like, for people that don't know, I mean, for the Grand Old Opry. I mean, is it just the history of just everything that that means that puts that pressure on somebody place? Because, I mean, there's a lot of people that don't realize, like, yeah, I don't know. Grand Old Opry. What? You're in Nashville. How many. How many people even does it sit? I don't even. [00:13:53] Speaker A: 4,500. It's pretty big. Like, it's like. I would say there's, like, 4,000 people in there, and it's just straight up, so it's a little intimidating, you know, and they're, like, coming to see. It feels like you. There's other. Few other people there. But, yeah, dude, the history is pretty crazy. And then, like, you also. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. I'm pretty guilty of that, but, like, to know all the people that have stepped in that circle and been in that place, and, like, I pulled up there when I was a kid, like, was getting guitar or pictures with the guitars outside, like, not even getting tours, just like, hey, we're here. We're on. You know, on the campus. But never, you know, even went in there. So pretty insane. That's one of those moments you just, like, realize, man, like, yeah, you can't stop dreaming. That's, like, a real thing. It's okay to, you know, to dream. I think a lot of times people are like, think it's, like, a weird thing to do. I'm like, you know, as long as you get your shit together, you should. You should be dreaming. You should be that guy that's, like, says the most outlandish shit because. Because it will happen. There's a good chance, you know? So that was one of those moments I realized, all right, yeah, don't stop doing that. Yeah, it's like. That was really cool. [00:14:59] Speaker C: Did you wear cowboy boots on stage there? [00:15:02] Speaker B: No. [00:15:02] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:03] Speaker A: No, I think I wore the Travis Scott. [00:15:05] Speaker B: Is that what it was? [00:15:06] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. You chose. [00:15:07] Speaker C: You're like, I'm not wearing cowboy boots on the most cowboy boot stage there should be. [00:15:11] Speaker A: I wore the frags. [00:15:12] Speaker C: Wow. [00:15:12] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:13] Speaker C: Bold move. [00:15:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:15] Speaker A: I wore a denim Vest, though. It was a little bit like western. A little bit. [00:15:19] Speaker B: I watched the documentary and saw some of the behind the scenes stuff and that's why it kind of triggered me to ask. Just because, like I said, we had not had that conversation with anybody until gate beers yet. And certainly an experience that I'm sure it was just something like you said, you'll remember forever. [00:15:34] Speaker A: Yeah, it was absolutely. [00:15:36] Speaker C: Are you big vest guy? [00:15:37] Speaker A: I freaking love vests. [00:15:38] Speaker B: Oh, yeah? [00:15:39] Speaker A: What do you think? [00:15:39] Speaker B: I'm a big vest guy? Yeah. [00:15:41] Speaker A: They keep you real warm. Yeah, Loosen it. Keep it. [00:15:44] Speaker B: My arms being a little bit like chilled. [00:15:46] Speaker A: It's a nice, great, easy way to layer. You know, your arms are looser. [00:15:50] Speaker C: What is your favorite vest, though, in your closet? [00:15:52] Speaker A: This puppy. [00:15:53] Speaker C: The red. The bold red. [00:15:54] Speaker A: I got. I got like an orange one that's kind of cool. Kind of like you're going straight reverse of what you're doing a little bit because of that camo. Kind of like swag, but so you're. [00:16:02] Speaker C: Going straight back to the future. Poofy. [00:16:04] Speaker A: This is it vest. This is so it. I love this one so much. I love that I had a green. [00:16:09] Speaker B: Puffy one on and then my wife said, nah, you should go with the more flat colored one. [00:16:15] Speaker C: No, I like that you guys, you and uncle Co matched today. [00:16:18] Speaker A: I'm not gonna lie. [00:16:19] Speaker C: I can't rock that one. I don't know. I don't know that I pulled that off. [00:16:22] Speaker B: So you eat a lot of cereal? [00:16:26] Speaker A: I mean, if I smoke enough weed, absolutely. And it just depends where I'm at in life, but there are times where that's all I do is eat cereal. [00:16:34] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:16:34] Speaker B: So the milk at the end. Do you drink the milk out of the bowl at the end of cereal? [00:16:39] Speaker A: Actually, no. I go back and I load up more cereal and I go until that's a new thing. But I used to always drink it. Now I want to keep eating top three cereals. Ooh, Fruity Pebbles. Number one. Okay, Number one, Fruity Pebbles. Wait, what's yours? [00:16:56] Speaker B: Cinnamon touch, Toast crunch kind of guy. [00:16:58] Speaker A: That's fire. That's fire. I haven't had that in a minute, but that is some good stuff. [00:17:02] Speaker B: The Reese's peanut butter puffs or whatever it is. [00:17:04] Speaker A: Those are good. Yeah, my girlfriend really loves those. I like just the straight peanut butter, though. Like the chocolate in there is fine, but I just rather. Let's just cut to the chase. The peanut butter is what matters. [00:17:14] Speaker B: No, I was just curious if you drink the milk because I don't drink the milk. [00:17:16] Speaker A: You Don't. What do you do? Just pour it out? [00:17:18] Speaker B: Pour it out. [00:17:18] Speaker A: Oh, no. So you got to utilize that milk. Absolutely. You have to, like, when you have that milk leftover, if you're like me and you ate it in three seconds, it's still cold. Right. It's got a little extra flavor, a little extra sweetness. And what you'll do is you'll just. You'll put a little bit of that, you know, that peanut butter in there, and you just go back and keep doing that. I just keep doing that until I'm on my last spoonful, and I just. That's what I do. [00:17:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:17:43] Speaker C: So we'll go one last. We'll go one last question here to kind of wrap it up. Surfside, been a good sponsor of all of us. Shout out and cruising Shit's Fire. Yeah. Try it out. So a question I asked. So you're on a plane. You're on a plane. It's going down. You happen to be on a plane that has every album known to man that you could take with you. Okay. You have a parachute youe're jumping out first five albums. What albums are you taking with for the rest of your life? And you got a short amount of time to decide. [00:18:28] Speaker A: I've got a hat. I've got to have a couple oldies and there. For sure. So I've got to go. Like, what was Fleetwood Max like? Big one. Do you guys remember? [00:18:37] Speaker C: Wasn't even born. [00:18:39] Speaker A: I mean, I was. [00:18:40] Speaker B: I was.
